ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE
Two discoveries, two weeks apart, sparked this work. The first was Sol LeWitt’s approach to art, which I encountered at Sol LeWitt: Open Structure at the Amorepacific Museum of Art (APMA), inside the Amorepacific headquarters building in Yongsan, Seoul. What struck me was how a simple set of rules could generate such a rich visual experience.
I was especially drawn to Wall Drawing #786A (1995), in which eight arcs form all twenty-eight unique pairs. I began tracing its logic: which elements repeat, how they combine, and how a simple rule generates the whole.
I worked out the system before reading the manifesto. Finding my interpretation confirmed in the text made the experience even more powerful. I discovered another way to take pleasure in art: through uncovering the logic that creates it.
The emotional response was especially strong because thinking in rules and algorithms comes naturally to me. Working out the system made me feel even more connected to the work. I could see the beauty and understand how it came into being at the same time. That joy of recognizing a system for myself was something I wanted to carry into my own work.
Then I discovered musical live coding: writing and changing code to create music in real time. As I explored its rules, the connection clicked. The exhibition and live coding shared an idea that fascinated me: an artist can create a system that generates the work. Seeing those two ideas come together made me want to create this piece.
SOUND IS GEOMETRY brings that connection into sound and image. Eight arcs form twenty-eight pairs; their geometry shapes melody, space, and resonance. The rules are fixed. The experience unfolds over time.
An independent study inspired by Sol LeWitt. Not an official project or a work by the artist.
